Day 2: Back of the Dragon

DISTANCE TRAVELED: 525 MI

Today is a “ride” day as opposed to a “cruise” day like I had yesterday. Let’s Ride!

Above the clouds at the peak of the dragon some shots along the way. I have the road to myself through the mist in the early morning sun - it’s beautiful. Read more about the Back of the Dragon here.

Traversing north and then back south and then on to Blowing Rock/Blue Ridge Parkway!

A great ride today on Back of the Dragon; two times! Challenging turns and great sweeping vistas mixed with mountainous terrain. Even though it’s only 32 miles, you have to take a break halfway observation point. This kind of riding is up in the seat with constant engagement of both hands and both feet. No music needed as the roar of the bike provides a great accompaniment.

I wanted to step back to yesterdays update on kindness of strangers involving an “incident” I had. Well, I made an error pulling over onto the breakdown lane (with the intent of getting out of rain squall) and put the bike down. Not a pleasant experience but I was fine except some bumps and bruises and a lacerated elbow. My bike sustained some minor damage that I was able to get fixed at Down Home Harley. This is mainly where I was touched by the kindness to which I referred. Dusty fixed my bike up with several new parts and refused to charge me. Another fellow customer named Bobby heard about my elbow and he went out and purchased bandages and first aid for me. Totally random but very much appreciated. I was able to ride afterwards and today with little effect.

I’m off tomorrow to ride the southern section of the Blue Ridge Parkway, an iconic experience along the top of the mountains.

Lots of these signs for squiggly roads!
